Here is a short video that shows how Disney’s artists drew Prince Naveen from “The Princess and the Frog“:
I remember when I went trick-or-treating, many years ago, dressed as a princess. It wasn’t a Disney princess, as is so popular today, because there wasn’t such a big selection of Disney princess costumes so many decades ago.
But, it didn’t matter. I felt so special and beautiful. My princess tiara might have made of rhinestones, but, to me, it was full of glittery diamonds. I gleefully twirled in circles, holding out my gorgeous skirt, for any person who would watch.
Today, I am mom to two young girls. My older daughter was never into princesses and could care less about dressing as a princess for Halloween. My younger daughter is another story entirely.
She LOVES dressing as a princess. For many years now, we have gotten her pretty princess dresses for her birthday. She is happiest when she is wearing one of her princess dresses, playing dress up with anyone who will join her, which sometimes includes one of our cats, dressed in Build a Bear clothing. Usually, though, she plays by herself.
One year for her birthday, her grandparents bought her a small trunk filled with dress up items, including several fancy dresses. She wore those dresses until she couldn’t fit them any more. The box itself is long since gone. She wore it out with all her playing.
Last year we all went to Disney World’s Halloween event. The event is geared towards children, and is intentionally made to not be scary (for those who don’t know, Disney’s rival, Universal Studios, hosts a Halloween event called Horror Nights that is made to be as scary as possible, and is not at all a family friendly Halloween event for families with younger children). The event is appropriately named Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party.
My older daughter dressed up as a black cat (see, I told you, no princesses for her!) and my younger was dressed as Sleeping Beauty’s Aurora. She wore a beautiful pink dress that had a stiff petticoat under the skirt. The skirt poofed out nicely, allowing her to twirl.
Being at Disney, her dress attracted a lot of attention from the Disney Cast Members (as they are called). She absolutely adored all the attention that she got, and loved each time a Cast Member called her princess. For example, “Hello, Princess! How is your Halloween?”
The event was wonderful. Even my husband enjoyed himself (he was dressed as Mr. Incredible, the strong man from Pixar’s “The Incredibles” movie). Although my older daughter doesn’t go for princesses, she had just as good a time at Disney’s Halloween party as the rest of us did. They got to trick-or-treat all over the park until midnight.
If one bag filled with candy, a Cast Member kindly gave them a new bag, so they could begin filling that one. It was a night we all remember fondly. Any one wanting to experience Halloween as only Disney can do should experience Mickey’s Halloween event at least once.
My mom took picture after picture of me that Halloween, and I still love looking at those pictures. That was my favorite Halloween costume, me wearing my child princess costume.
